I'm currently drafting an article discussing Paul Kingsnorth's conception of The Machine and relating this to Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy (trying to think through the possible contradictions I hold in both sympathising with the idea of The Machine and wanting the exploration of Mars). As per your article an HEI could be benign but I think it fits into the category of The Machine. HNI would probably not be 'Machine'.
Sounds like a GHP is a special case of the HNI, and those of us without the skill or resources to set up a GHP should instead focus on joining or otherwise assisting HNIs. Is that about right?
